Every year, the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA) celebrate the indominable spirit of their industry. Metal and engineering sector leaders gathered in the Country Club Johannesburg at the end of last year for 2024’s Awards for Excellence.

Alongside 13 other category winners, MiTek won the judges’ hearts in the Corporate Social Responsibility category. This was for a pair of collaborations which exemplified our social impact strategy, an ongoing initiative in place since 2018.

Our support: educate to innovate

A key pillar of our social impact strategy is the fact that we educate to innovate. We invest to ensure people, particularly young people, learn the skills to get secure and lucrative jobs. Two standout examples of this initiative in action are our work with Botshabelo Children’s Home and Masikhule Child Care.

Botshabelo have cared for abandoned babies and found safe, loving homes for them since 2000. Since 2010, they’ve also provided educational services for disadvantaged young people, giving them another chance at securing stable careers.

Masikhule works with early childhood development (ECD) teachers to make sure they have the resources and support they need. Over 2,000 children aged under five benefit from their work every year.

Our investment helped open 15 reading corners at community ECS centres across the Western Cape region, and supplied them with critically important resources like books and writing paper. Now, they’re helping more children than ever get the best possible start in life.

More about SEIFSA and the Awards for Excellence
SEIFSA have represented and advised our metal and engineering sectors since 1943. Today, they’re a nationwide federation of 16 independent employer associations. Over 170,000 employees across 1,300 individual companies benefit from their proactive support.

The Awards recognise the resilience of those who work in a challenging area of the economy.
